How do I verify a supplier's claims?

Ask for the test condition behind every range figure, then ask whether they publish an errata process. A supplier who cannot state the condition has not measured it.

What documentation should I ask for?

Datasheet, interface protocol, first-article inspection record and a certificate of conformance. The last two are what a defence integrator's quality department will require.
