Which laser rangefinder module works for port crane and container positioning?

Industrial positioning is a different problem from long-range observation: the target is metres away, the requirement is repeatability and update rate, and the module lives in a steel structure with vibration and weather. For those jobs the short-range end of the catalogue matters more than the 20 km headline, and the interface (RS-422 or UART) plus the sampling rate decide whether the controller can use the number.

Questions people ask about this

Why not just use the longest-range module?

Long range costs aperture, mass and pulse energy. For a target a few metres away it buys nothing and makes the housing bigger.

What matters most for a crane controller?

Repeatability and update rate, then the interface. A noisy reading at 10 Hz is worse than a stable one at 2 Hz.

Is a rangefinder the right sensor at all?

For a reflective target at a known angle, yes. For a diffuse container surface at an unknown angle, check the beam divergence and spot size at that distance first.
