Range test report template
A range figure without these twelve fields is an anecdote. Fill this in once and every later comparison — between modules, between suppliers, between revisions — becomes checkable.
| Target | Dimensions in metres, material and surface finish, measured reflectance at the test wavelength. |
|---|---|
| Distance | Measured with a reference instrument, and the reference named. |
| Visibility | Meteorological visibility in km, measured or taken from a stated source. |
| Illumination | Sun angle and whether the target was front-lit, side-lit or back-lit. |
| Atmosphere | Temperature, humidity and any precipitation, with values not adjectives. |
| Module configuration | Model, firmware, aperture fitted, repetition rate, integration time setting. |
| Mount | How the module was held, and whether boresight was checked before the run. |
| Sample size | Number of shots per distance, and how many returns were accepted. |
| Result | Median and spread, not a single best-case number. |
| Failures | The distances or conditions where returns were lost, recorded rather than omitted. |
| Operator and date | Who ran it and when; the instrument serials used. |
| Deviations | Anything that differed from the plan, stated before the numbers are read. |
The one rule
Report the median and the spread, and record the failures. A test report that only contains the best distance achieved is a marketing document with a stopwatch. The failures are the part an integrator needs, because the failure boundary is what decides whether the product works on a bad day.
Want our test result for a specific target?
Give the target, distance and visibility; the measurement or the honest inability to measure comes back.

Template only. Published ranges in this catalogue are the manufacturers' own figures with their conditions; they are not results from this template.
