What the 1535 nm band is for

Erbium-glass sources at 1535 nm (also written 1.54 µm) sit above the retinal-focusing range, so a module can carry two orders of magnitude more pulse energy at a stated Class 1 module level. That is how 6–23 km modules exist at 200–410 g. The cost is a larger aperture, InGaAs detection and 0.5–10 Hz rates.
